Walmart announces "Great for You" front-of-package symbol
Walmart rolled out a new icon on February 7, 2012, to help its customers identify healthier foods. The "Great for You" symbol will appear on packaging for foods that meet nutritional criteria established by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the FDA, the USDA, and the IOM, beginning with Walmart’s Great Value, Marketside food items, and fruits and vegetables.

Calorie Count Plus Points Based on Added Sugars, Sodium, and Saturated and Trans Fats Recommended as New Front-of-Package Nutrition Labeling System

Federal agencies should develop a new nutrition rating system with symbols to display on the front of food and beverage packaging that graphically convey calorie counts by serving size and a "point" value showing whether the saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars in the products are below threshold levels. This new front-of-package system should apply to all foods and beverages and replace any other symbols currently being used on the front of packaging, added the committee that wrote the report.

Front-of-Package Symbols and Systems: IOM Phase 2 Report

Shoppers may be confused by the proliferation of symbols and nutrition rating systems on food packaging in recent years intended to help consumers make healthy choices. Moreover, questions have been raised about the nutritional criteria underlying different systems. Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols: Phase II Report recommends criteria and a process that federal agencies could use to develop a single front-of-package system and icons that would help consumers compare foods and beverages and instantly recognize healthier options.
